When you’re in the mood for pulled pork that melts in your mouth or ribs that fall off the bone, you don’t have to go too far in Springfield, Tennessee. This region is home to some of the best barbecue joints in the state. The next time you’re craving Southern barbecue, here’s a list of four of the best places to visit in the Springfield area:

Whitts Barbecue

For classic Tennessee barbecue without the fuss, make a trip to Whitts Barbecue . This beloved barbecue institution opened in 2001 and attracts customers from Springfield, White House, Greenbrier, and other surrounding communities. In addition to dine-in service, Whitts offers catering for up to 5,000 people, making it the perfect choice for your next family get-together or company party.

One of the secrets to great barbecue is the sauce, and Whitts has a mild and a hot version to satisfy any palate. They’re well known for their juicy turkey legs and mouthwatering pulled pork sandwiches. Other items on the menu include smoked wings, ribs, and loaded potatoes with meat, cheese, butter, and sour cream. Whitts also serves cornbread with all the fixings and a variety of sides, including potato salad, baked beans, fried apples, corn on the cob, and coleslaw. Pair your meal with a traditional sweet tea, made exactly the way it’s supposed to be.

Whether you’re feeding two people or 12, Whitts offers a variety of combination platters to meet your needs. Their picnic pack comes with three pounds of meat and a variety of sides, while the family packs can feed from five up to a dozen people. You can also order pork, beef, and turkey by the pound if you want to have some meat for leftover sandwiches the next day.

Location: 3516 Tom Austin Highway, Springfield, Tennessee.

Hours: 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The Feed Meal

Tennesseans know that the best barbecue can come from unexpected places, such as a gas station or — in the case of The Feed Meal — a food truck. Chef James Hall opened The Feed Meal after working in kitchens for over three decades, learning how to create and perfect homestyle barbecue recipes. Hall prepares all the food in a professional kitchen and cooks everything in his state-of-the-art food truck, which serves customers across the Springfield area.

The Feed Meal offers a small but impressive menu, featuring favorites like a pulled pork shoulder sandwich. The tender pulled pork comes topped with slaw and your choice of barbecue sauce. If you prefer your meat served outside the bun, try the pulled pork nachos, which come topped with cheese, jalapenos, and tomatoes. Other menu favorites include the Texas-style beef brisket sandwich and the smoked bologna sandwich. All entrees come with a soda or water and kettle chips.

You can find The Feed Meal at many events in the Springfield area, and they also offer catering services if you want to have their truck at your next event. You can even have the truck come directly to your home, and Chef James will prepare fresh food from the grill for you and your family and friends to enjoy.

Location and hours: Varies — check the food truck’s website for up-to-date information.

Wise Guy’s BBQ

Head to Wise Guy’s BBQ in nearby Joelton, Tennessee, when you’re craving good old-fashioned homemade barbecue. They’re only open to the public every other weekend and can sell out in a matter of hours, so get there early. At Wise Guy’s they slow cook all their meats and make their own sauces, delivering authentic Southern-style barbecue to the Springfield area.

Wise Guy’s offers traditional barbecue favorites, such as melt-in-your-mouth brisket and savory chicken wings smoked to perfection. You can order a half or a full slab of ribs, cooked so tender they nearly fall off the bone. Every entree comes with generous portions, so don’t worry about leaving hungry. For a full meal, choose a plate of either pulled pork, chicken, ribs, brisket, or smoked jalapeno cheddar sausage and your choice of two sides and a drink. The homemade sides include mac and cheese, baked beans, pasta salad, coleslaw, and green beans.

While everyone can enjoy Wise Guy’s during their open weekends, they also offer catering services for groups and large parties. You can order meat by the pan, which serves up to 20 guests. Sides, desserts, and beverages are also available on the catering menu.

Location: 8471 Coopertown Road, Joelton, Tennessee.

Hours: Open to the public every other weekend until they are sold out; check the website for open weekends.

Buck’s Barbeque

When you want high-quality barbecue with friendly service, visit Buck’s Barbeque . This locally owned family business has two locations in Tennessee, including their Goodlettsville restaurant in the Springfield area. Buck’s offers dine-in, carry-out, and drive-thru service, along with full-service catering.

Buck’s Barbeque serves a variety of entrees, including pulled pork, pulled chicken, and ribs. While you can’t go wrong with any item on the menu, Buck’s is famous for their barbecue nachos, affectionately known as “heaven in a Styrofoam box.” Tortilla chips come topped with your choice of meat, baked beans, or queso. Buck’s also offers daily specials on some favorite menu items, including pork sandwiches, BBQ burritos, and stuffed baked potatoes. Most dishes come with a choice of side, including baked beans, vinegar slaw, fried dill pickles, and onion rings.

When you have a larger crowd to feed, pick up one of Buck’s value packs, which come with enough food for up to 35 people. Buck’s Barbeque also caters events for up to 1,000 people, including weddings, reunions, open houses, and corporate events.
